Prostate Cancer (PSA Testing)
Prostate
cancer is responsible for approximately 200 deaths per
week, making it the second most common cause of male
cancer deaths in the UK. Importantly, it is treatable
if caught early.
- Key risk factors for the disease are age, family
history, ethnicity and diet.
PSA Testing
The PSA test is a simple blood test and an important part
of cancer control. It is also an aid to prevention and
early diagnosis. The aim of testing is to:-
- Detect disease at an early stage, when treatment
is easier and more effective
- Detect disease before symptoms begin, when it is
more likely to be curable
Many cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed when the
disease has spread and has to be controlled rather than
cured. Detection at an early stage
significantly enhances the chances of successful treatment.
Patients requiring further investigative procedures
post test, will be referred to their G.P., who may conduct
further examinations and/or refer the patient for specialist
advice and treatment.
Health Essential
believes it inappropriate to test men less than 40 years
