Employee Health Checks
This is a very
popular service, for which we provide a range of tests
to ascertain levels of blood cholesterol, blood glucose,
and blood pressure. Height and weight measurements are
also taken and used to provide a Body Mass Index (BMI)
calculation. Completion of a Lifestyle Questionnaire
can help people focus on a healthy way of life, whilst
additional tests, such as lung function can also be
provided.
Blood Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood,
which if left untreated builds up in the walls of your
arteries, causing a reduction in blood flow and increased
risk of Heart Attack or Stroke.
Nearly half of all deaths from Coronary Heart Disease
are due to raised levels of cholesterol, which may not
produce any symptoms and people are therefore unaware
of the potential problem. With early detection and treatment
of raised levels, many deaths could be prevented.
Blood Glucose
Diabetes Mellitus is a serious condition and occurs
when the body is unable to use sugar (glucose) properly
and levels in the blood become too high.
There are two types of diabetes, TYPE 1 and TYPE 2.
TYPE 1 is usually diagnosed before the age of 40 years,
mostly in children and young teenagers. The body fails
to produce the hormone insulin, which helps it use glucose
for energy and consequently it has to be provided by
injection.
TYPE 2 is mostly diagnosed over the age of 40 years,
however its prevalence in younger people is increasing
due to a general increase in obesity. Here, the body
either fails to produce enough insulin or does not use
it properly.
Blood Pressure
The term blood pressure refers to the force or tension
of blood in the walls of the arteries.
Untreated high blood pressure (hypertension) will cause
the heart to eventually overwork to the point where
serious damage can occur. High blood pressure can cause
damage to the brain, the eyes and / or the kidneys.
Most cases of high blood pressure have no cure, but
can be managed with controlled diet and medication.
Low blood pressure (hypotension) is the term used when
pressure on the blood vessel walls falls below normal
limits. Low blood pressure that does not cause symptoms
is generally considered to be a sign of good cardiovascular
health.
Some forms of low blood pressure require diagnosis,
evaluation and treatment. Symptoms may include dizziness
and / or fainting due to lack of oxygen to the brain.
Low blood pressure can also be caused by medications,
or changes in medications.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI is used as a guide to indicate whether you are of
normal weight, under weight, over weight or obese. It
is a scientific calculation achieved by measuring your
height and weight. Although use of BMI is common, it
should only be used as a guide and if you have any concerns
regarding your weight, you are best advised to contact
your GP.
Lung Function
Measuring the two most important indicators, air flow
(FEV1) and air volume (FVC), help identify Asthma and
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), as well
as assisting in monitoring the course of these diseases
and their response to treatment. |
