Coeliac Disease Testing
Intolerance to a protein called gluten found in grains
such as wheat, barley, rye and oats is the cause of
Coeliac Disease and can have very serious effects on
some people. The gut lining becomes damaged and food
absorption is reduced leading to nutritional deficiencies.
Conditions such as osteoporosis, infertility and gut
cancer can occur if the disease is left untreated.
Symptoms include tiredness, anaemia, diarrhoea, abdominal
discomfort, weight loss, vomiting and mouth ulcers.
The disease is a lifelong condition and cannot be cured
but can be managed effectively by following a gluten-free
diet.
The Testing Procedure
A simple fingerprick blood test is all that is required
to identify Coeliac Disease. Results are available within
10 minutes.
Aftercare
It is advisable to seek specialist advice from a dietician
who can help you make the necessary changes to your
diet incorporating all the essential nutrients for a
healthy life. Many foods are naturally gluten-free and
there are many gluten-free alternatives to 'normal'
foods, such as gluten-free breads, pasta, pizza bases
and biscuits
Once reverting to a gluten-free diet you'll feel much
better within a matter of weeks although it can take
6 months or more before food absorption can be considered
normal.
